24. Drinking and smoking

Alcohol itself does not worsen AD. However, when you drink alcohol, most patients experience increased itchiness, and as a result hurt their skin while it is recovering. As a result, as long as your rashes don’t start itching, you can drink to relieve some stress. Wine has an antioxidant effect, so I recommend you drink wine (preferably red wine, but white wine is fine as well). Refrain from drinking beer or shochu. There are some young men with severe AD who reek of cigarettes even from a meter away. They say that they smoke 40 cigarettes a day, and spend 15 to 20 thousand yen on cigarettes every month. Ideally, they should be spending this money on supplements, but they just cannot stop, and they know it. I understand their addiction and cannot lecture them to quit. In this case, you should take vitamin and mineral supplements to minimize the harmful effects of cigarettes. You should take vitamin C and avoid supplements containingβ- karatine. Taking β-karatine alone will increase the risk of lung cancer of smokers. However, if you are takingβ-karatine from natural sources like carrots, you have nothing to worry about.
